Chris Johnson's Heroics Lift Bobcats Into First-Ever Conference Championship
The Bobcats punched their ticket to the first conference championship game in program history with a thrilling 16-15 win over Brunswick CC on Thursday. Chris Johnson sparked the offense with a three-run homer in the first and added an RBI single in the fifth to finish with four RBIs. The Bobcats stormed out of the gate with a seven-run first inning, featuring a two-run triple by Josh Smith and RBI knocks from Diego Melendez and Ben Malone.
Despite the early lead, Brunswick CC clawed back with a pair of six-run frames to go ahead 13-9. Undeterred, the Bobcats battled through adversity and entered the ninth inning down by one. Justin Smith tied the game with a clutch RBI single before Sylvester Clarke drove in the go-ahead run to put the Bobcats back on top. Hector Norreiga earned the win in relief, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just three runs on four hits. Bishop Quarles led the 16-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort, while four others had multi-hit games.
The resilient comeback capped another memorable moment in a remarkable postseason run for the Bobcats, who now head to the conference title game for the first time in school history.
Bobcats Fall Short in Championship Debut
In their historic first appearance in the conference championship, the Bobcats were overpowered by a surging Catawba Valley squad, falling 22-3 on Friday. The Red Hawks jumped out to an early lead and steadily pulled away, plating five runs in the first two innings before breaking the game open with a six-run fifth and an 11-run eighth.
Despite the tough loss, the Bobcats continued to fight. Jason Johnson started on the mound and battled through 4.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) with four strikeouts. At the plate, Bishop Quarles drove in two runs, and Angel Arjona led the offense with a 2-for-3 performance. The team collected seven hits on the day but couldn't match the pace of Catawba Valley's 13-hit, 13-walk offensive surge.
While the outcome wasn't what the Bobcats hoped for, the journey was historic. Their appearance in the championship game marked a new chapter for the program and capped off a postseason full of grit, resilience, and firsts that will serve as a foundation for future success.
